Homecoming Day of Service, 10/1

Tigers!
We all know Mizzou's spirit of service is unparalleled, especially during the Homecoming season where our beloved alma mater sets records for such things as blood and food donations. To that end, the Mizzou Alumni Association is engaging its chapters nation-wide in a Homecoming Day of Service on Saturday, October 1, 2011. Please join The Boston 'Zou as we take part in this effort at Saturday/Sunday's Bread.

Saturday/Sunday's Bread is a Boston soup kitchen with the mission of providing hot, healthy meals in a safe and inviting atmosphere, free from society’s prejudices and judgments, in an environment free of racial, cultural or religious stereotypes. It is an interfaith, interracial, interdenominational activity of people concerned with the hungry in the Boston area. Saturday/Sunday’s Bread is an entirely volunteer-run organization that has been providing meals to the hungry for over 25 years.

Saturday/Sunday's Bread is located at
St. John the Evangelist
35 Bowdoin St.
Boston, MA

This volunteer shift is from 12:30 to about 4 p.m. Volunteers will set up the dining area, prepare the meal, greet and serve diners, and help cleanup. Guests are served from 2:30 to 3:30. Cleanup follows from 3:30 to 4:00 or 4:15. The location is easily accessible by T (Bowdoin on the Blue Line, Government Center on the Green Line), and there is also nearby parking available. Teenaged-children may attend.
We will follow the service event by a fun social activity nearby, details TBA.
Please RSVP to TheBostonZou@gmail.com or by responding to the Facebook invitation. Hope to see you there!

Mizzou vs. OU Watch Party, 9/24

This is a big one, folks! Mizzou travels to Norman to begin "conference" play, this Saturday, against Oklahoma. We beat the Sooners, last year. And, with the much-needed confidence boost from last week's 69-0 trampling of Western Illinois, we know the Tigers can come away with a W.

The Boston 'Zou will gather at its Boston home of the Brighton Beer Garden, starting at 7:30. Appetizers are 50% off for watch party attendees during the game. We'll have our 50/50 half-time raffle. And, we'll continue to collect non-perishable/canned food items in support of the Tiger Food Fight. At our season-opener, we collected 22 pounds! (Food-only weight.) Let's keep up the good work, as we push to beat the 100 pound mark, this football season.

Kick-Off Wrap-Up

Thanks to all who joined us, this past Saturday, at the Brighton Beer Garden! We had a crowd of over 40 people meeting one another and cheering on the Tigers as they start the 2011 season at 1-0.  Shawn Cooper, of SolutionsByShawn.com and friend of Mizzou, captured our event on film.  Below is a link to some photos displaying many of the smiles and laughter shared throughout the afternoon.

Due to the horribly late timing of our Mizzou @ ASU game, two of our favorite Tigers have kindly offered up their home to host the watch party, September 9 at 10:30 p.m. in Durham, NH.  Please RSVP to thebostonzou@gmail.com if you wish to join us. We will confirm with the address and directions.

Because the Mizzou vs. Western Illinois game will be on Pay Per View, only, our next official watch party will be Mizzou @ Oklahoma on Saturday, September 24.  The pre-game social will begin at 7:30pm, and kick-off is at 8:00 pm, ET.  We'll gather at our Boston home: The Brighton Beer Garden.

Mizzou Day of Service, 10/1
Be on the look-out for details regarding our upcoming day of service! Mark your calendars for October 1, the Tigers' off-week.

The Boston 'Zou Season Kick-Off! 9/3

It's that time of year, again! And, Mizzou Football is in full swing as our beloved Tigers play host to the Miami (OH) Red Hawks on Saturday, September 3. The Boston 'Zou will gather at the Brighton Beer Garden to cheer on the Tigers and kick off this 2011 season with bang. We'll have prizes, as well as the 50/50 raffle. Additionally, we have negotiated 50% off of all appetizers for our events at the BBG (except crab cakes).

As ...we remain committed to Mizzou's spirit of service to our community, we will continue to collect non-perishable food items to benefit local agencies. In fact, thanks to your generous donations, last year we raised over 100 lbs of food! We're taking it on as a chapter challenge to beat that, this year.

Also, thanks to your generosity, our Tornado Relief Effort fundraiser raised nearly $1600--benefitting the Heart of Missouri United Way and the United Way of Pioneer Valley.

Rescheduled: Boston 'Zou Tornado Relief Effort, now 6/21

Spread the word! This event has been rescheduled. Due to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, our venue is unable to accommodate our event, tomorrow. Because of this, we will be hosting it on Tuesday, June 21.

Mizzou Alumni Association members, and all interested parties, will gather at Brighton Beer Garden (386 Market St., Brighton) from 6-9PM.

“It’s heartbreaking to see people from your home state going through such a tragedy and not have the ability to help in-person,” said David Sprague, the chapter’s president. “Hopefully our efforts will help, in some small way, the recovery efforts.”

The Brighton Beer Garden and a number of Boston-area businesses have donated gift certificates and services to be auctioned off. All proceeds will go directly to the United Way campaigns responding to both Joplin (Heart of Missouri) and Springfield (Pioneer Valley).

M--I--Z! Beat..K..U!

Hey everyone!

Thanks to those who joined us in Portsmouth, NH, last weekend for a fun event (despite the loss to KSU). We had about 20 folks in attendance for the trip. And, a number of us enjoyed a tour and some beer-tasting at the Red Hook Brewery, afterward. Nothing like drowning your sorrows in a glass of good craft beer, made on the premesis.

But, onward we look as the Tigers play host to archrival, Kansas, this Saturday! For those who ordered the 2011 Beat KU t-shirts at our Founders' Day celebration, we should have those available for you at the watch party.  Details below.

Founders' Day Wrap-Up

Thanks to all who came out for a fantastic evening at The Boston 'Zou's innaugural Founders' Day Celebration!  Last night, we gathered at our local home, the Brighton Beer Garden, for a pre-game networking session and to watch the Tigers host (and beat) Texas Tech.  Todd McCubbin, Executive Director of the Mizzou Alumni Association, joined us for the fun and lent his support and insight toward our efforts in growing the chapter.  And, we are also excited to share that Mizzou's own Brett Austin, (ESPN coordinating producer) and ESPN SportsCenter anchor/ABC's Wipeout co-host John Anderson also joined in the festivities!  All-around, very cool and down-to-earth guys!  Photos below.  (Aside: ESPN recruits aggressively from the MU School of Journalism and currently employs over 20 Mizzou grads.)

Be sure to check back for updates and details on our road trip to Portsmouth, NH on February 26!

Winter Updates & Founders' Day Celebration 2/15

Tigers:
Thanks to those who joined us, last night, for our first-ever Mizzouaoke session! We had a blast pouring out covers of hits by the likes of Rick Astley, Metallica, Digital Underground and Salt & Pepa! But, on to next week already...

Each February, Mizzou Alumni Association chapters host a Founders' Day celebration. Our beloved Alma Mater was founded in February of 1839 and is still going strong! For The Boston 'Zou's celebration, we will be joined on February 15th by Todd McCubbin, Executive Director of the Alumni Association and Associate Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations.

As always, we'll convene at Brighton Beer Garden (386 Market St., Brighton). Our event will start downstairs in the function room for a meet-and-greet, with complimentary appetizers on hand. We'll talk a little bit about Mizzou's grand history and offer everyone a chance to share their favorite Mizzou memory. This will be a lot of fun!

Then at 7:00 we'll head upstairs for the Mizzou-Texas Tech game. As always, please bring non-perishable food items to benefit local food banks. Please RSVP!

Our chapter is growing day-by-day, and we're meeting lots of new Tigers at each event. If you've thought about attending an event, this will be a great opportunity to see what we're all about. In the last 18 months, Some fantastic bonds have been created already...you should be a part of it! Check out our website and friend us on Facebook.
